CHAST in Iraq

History

Iraqi Red Crescent Society and French Red Cross launched the process of adapting the CHAST methodology to Iraqi context late 2018 with European Union MADAD funds.

After following the steps for adaptation (described here) with an international hygiene promotion expert S. Lindsay Sathiya Nesan, the WASH teams of IRCS and FRC released the kit in May 2019.

The 18 branches and HQ of IRCS were trained in December 2019. Other National Societies attended to the training: Syrian Arab Red Crescent, Jordanian Red Crescent, Norwegian Red Cross and Swedish Red Cross.

In 2021, at the Iraqi WASH Cluster request, IRCS and FRC trained 8 organisations on CHAST: Arche Nova (3 partcipants), COOPI (1), OXFAM (1), SEDO (2), Terre Des Hommes (1), Amal Organization for Relief and Development (1), Peace Winds Japan (2), Pekawa (3). The report of the training can be consulted here.
